Dr. Vergis completed his Doctor of Medicine (2002) and residency in general surgery (2008) at the University of Manitoba while concurrently earning a Masters of Medical Education through the University of Dundee, Scotland. He then attained a clinical fellowship in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Toronto after obtaining his Canadian and American Board Certifications in surgery.
He is currently a Professor of surgery at the University of Manitoba and is an active member of the minimally invasive surgery program at St. Boniface and Victoria general hospital’s. Dr. Vergis holds several clinical leadership positions including clinical lead for the provincial bariatric surgery program and the director of surgical peritoneal dialysis for the Manitoba renal program. His educational leadership positions include post graduate surgical skills director, general surgery residency endoscopy director, and the program director for the minimally invasive and bariatric surgery fellowhip at the Univeristy of Manitoba.
Dr. Vergis research focus is in surgical education, surgical communication platforms, and outcomes in bariatric surgery. He has given numerous invited lectures both nationally and internationally. His research is supported by several institutional and national research grants, including Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Medical Education Research Grant and from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
